US President-elect Joe Biden has conveyed his concern by saying “people may die” from COVID-19 if his incoming administration continues to delay a smooth transition.
Biden has promised to battle against COVID-19 if elected, and in his significant step since the election, he set up an advisory team to start planning his administration’s approach after his inauguration on January 20. But it has received no cooperation from Trump’s team yet.
President-elect Biden, a Democrat, has 306 votes in the electoral college, surpassing the 270 thresholds needed to win the presidential election.
Yet Mr. Trump, a Republican, tweeted on Monday: “I won the Election!”
The transition process that will be headed by a Trump appointee has yet to recognise Mr. Biden and his running mate Kamala Harris as winners.
Speaking in his home state of Delaware on Monday, Mr. Biden said: “Does anyone understand this? It’s about saving lives, for real, this is not hyperbole.”
When asked about Trump’s refusal to cooperate with the new administration, Biden told: “More people may die if we don’t coordinate”. “The vaccine is important. But it’s of no use until you’re vaccinated.”
He further added, “If we have to wait until January 20 to start that planning, it puts us behind.”
Asked if he would encourage state leaders to put back stay-at-home orders, the president-elect Joe Biden evaded and instead called on officials to encourage mask-wearing.
