A woman suspected of sending a letter containing the poison ricin to the U.S. President Donald Trump has been arrested as she tried to enter the U.S. from Canada at a border crossing in New York State, a U.S. law enforcement official told.
According to the law enforcement official, the woman was carrying a gun and arrested by the U.S. authorities.
A spokesperson for the Royal Canadian Mounted Police told CNN Sunday that “the RCMP is still not in a position to issue a statement, or to confirm/deny any reports on arrests.”
In a statement provided to CNN on Saturday, the FBI’s Washington field office told that “the FBI and our U.S. Secret Service and U.S. Postal Inspection Service partners are investigating a suspicious letter received at a U.S. government mail facility. At this time, there is no known threat to public safety.”
Mary-Liz Power, the chief spokeswoman for Canada’s Minister of Public Safety Bill Blair, said CNN on Saturday “We are aware of the concerning reports of packages containing ricin directed toward US federal government sites”.
“Canadian law enforcement is working closely with their US counterparts. As this is an active investigation we cannot comment further,” she had said.
Extracted from castor beans, ricin is a highly toxic compound, and can be used in powder, pellet, mist, or acid form. As little as 500 micrograms can kill an adult.
There have been several prior instances in which the U.S. officials have been targeted with ricin sent through the mail.
