President Trump admitted that the coronavirus would take a fatal figure, “more deadly than even your strenuous flus,” but he continued playing it down. On February 7th, Woodward heard Trump calling it “deadly stuff” even before the first confirmed COVID-19 death.
In a series of interviews with Bob Woodward, Trump acknowledged the virus to be five times deadlier than the flu, and his acknowledgment creates a stark contrast with his public comments.
In an attempt to defend his response, the U.S. President said, “I still like playing it down, because I don’t want to create a panic.” However, by March 19th, he purposely kept downplaying its perils. On August 5th, he said children were pretty much “immune.”
“Now it’s turning out it’s not just old people, Bob. Just today and yesterday some startling facts came out… Young people too, plenty of young people,” as the U.S President was heard in the recording.
His opponent, Joe Biden commented, “He had the information. He knew how dangerous it was. And while this deadly disease ripped through our nation, he failed to do his job on purpose.” He also added while campaigning in Warren, “It’s beyond despicable. It’s a dereliction of duty. It’s a disgrace.”
Since Trump’s admission of downplaying the coronavirus, Biden has witnessed a dramatic flow in his support within a couple of hours. Woodward realizes Trump’s startling revelations are a setback to his opportunities that could bring a change in “the leadership clock.”
