Netflix is about to knock out competitors for the worldwide distribution rights to Halle Berry’s directional debut, a mixed martial art drama, named “Bruised”.
The Oscar winner director stars in this film as Jackie Justice, a washed-up MMA fighter struggling for redemption as both an athlete, as well as a mother.
Directed from a script by Michelle Rosenfarb, this film will screen virtually on Saturday from Toronto. It is stitching up a sale close to $20 million, insiders familiar with negotiations said.
Although Netflix has not yet divulged the reported offer, a rapturous Berry took to Twitter to articulate her exhilaration over the deal.
“I am speechless. Thank you @netflix for believing in my vision, cannot wait for y’all to finally see” it, Berry tweeted Friday.
She suffered some brutal injuries on set. She broke two of her ribs and it almost caused the production to pause.
“I thought, ‘They’re going to think I’m high,’” Berry told Variety. “They’re going to think, ‘Halle has lost her mind.’”
“As an actor, I always show up and do my part, and I can only do what I can do,” she added. “Being the director, I have a part in the totality of every department. I get to have a voice. That was different, and I really loved that.”
Producers on the project also include Brad Feinstein, Basil Iwanyk, Guymon Casady, Erica Lee, Paris Kassidokostas-Latsis, Linda Gottlieb, Terry Dougas, and Gillian Hormel, while the stars are Shamier Anderson, Stephen Sheila Atim, McKinley Henderson, and Adan Canto.
