Deion Sanders, the former NFL defensive back and a member of the Pro Football Hall of Fame announced Sunday on his new podcast that he will be the next head football coach at Jackson State.

Jackson State athletic director Ashley Robinson told “It’s very big for Jackson State University”. “Not only for Jackson State University, this is very big for the country right now. Very big for the state of Mississippi. To Coach Prime, Jackson State University — a blue blood program full of Hall of Famers — it’s just a great time.”

Sanders, 53, is currently the offensive coordinator at Trinity Christian School in Cedar Hill, Texas, and will finish out the season there before beginning preparations for Jackson State’s season that has been pushed to the spring for the COVID-19 pandemic.

“God called me to Jackson State,” Sanders said on his podcast.

When Sanders was asked why he was taking the job, he said, “Why not? Isn’t this the time?” “Isn’t this the moment? Isn’t this what’s needed? To match what our president eloquently said, it’s a match made in heaven. This is a God move.”

Jackson State dismissed John Hendrick on Aug. 31. He was named interim head in 2018 and retained the job full time in 2019. Sanders replaces John Hendrick, who went 6-9 overall and 5-5 in the SWAC East.

While Robinson, as well as Hudson, appeared on Sanders’ podcast, the school has yet to officially proclaim his hiring as head coach, saying it will have an announcement about the program on Monday.
